Red Cross opens Webster Co. service center
Monday, 09 November 2009
The Oktibbeha County chapter of the American Red Cross has opened a service center in Eupora, serving all of Webster County.
The office is staffed by volunteer Donna Barmore and is located at 1850 Veterans’ Memorial Blvd.
The Webster Red Cross office is currently open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment on other days.
“We are very excited about the support we’ve received from Webster County and look forward to expanding our work hours there,” said Carol Moss Read, chair of the Oktibbeha County Red Cross board of directors.
Barmore is an American Red Cross certified instructor in CPR, First Aid and automated external defibrillators, as well as babysitting, Pet First Aid and blood-borne pathogens.
The health and safety courses can be geared toward the school and community or the workplace, where they help businesses meet OSHA requirements.
Courses are offered on a cost recovery basis.  Amanda Ellison of Eupora serves as an office volunteer.
“Red Cross is a good friend to Webster County; we appreciate what you do for us and we’re glad to help,” said Robert Hitt, chairman of the Webster County Board of Supervisors.
“We’re glad you’re here,” said Mayor Tommy Lott.  “We look forward to working with the organization.”
The American Red Cross is a disaster relief organization that provides health and safety services, international tracing services during wartime, services to armed forces, and blood services.
Disaster preparation is an important part of the work done by the organization, and the Webster County office will partner with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) warehouse located in Eupora.
Red Cross depends on volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to carry out its work.
Volunteers constitute 97 percent of the total work force of the agency, serving as members of the board, instructors teaching lifesaving skills, disaster action team members, office administrators, event organizers, and more.
The Webster County office will provide 24 hour disaster relief service to the county. To contact Barmore, call 662-744-4838.
“It’s exciting to see our chapter expand like this,” said Becky Wilkes, Oktibbeha County chapter director.
“This means services will be more easily accessible to Webster County residents and it also means they will have an opportunity to get involved in our volunteer efforts.
“It’s a good reflection on  the hard work done by a lot of people,” Wilkes added.
