Submitted photo/SDN Starkville Electric Department employee Johnny Buchanan hangs a Christmas banner in downtown Starkville Friday. Christmas banners adorning Main Street will briefly replace those highlighting Starkville and Mississippi State University and take the place of the previous tinsel decorations, organizers said Friday. Starkville Electric Department crews installed the banners donated by the women of the Starkville Civic League, organizers said in a statement. Melissa Dixon, Blufish Design creative director and president of the Starkville Downtown Business Association, donated her services to design the new banners. “Holiday banners for Main Street is a project that has been on the Starkville Downtown Business Association’s agenda for a while now, but it seems at the end of each year, we don’t have the extra funds for it,” Dixon said.
When I heard that the Starkville Civic League ladies had offered to buy all of the banners, I felt strongly about Blufish Design donating the design work for them. I felt like it was the least we could do to match their generosity,” she said. The Civic League’s contribution is significant, said Jennifer Glaze, Greater Starkville Development Partnership vice president for tourism development. “On behalf of the Starkville Partnership, we heartily thank the women of the Starkville Civic League for their generosity and continuing service to our community. The banners provide a new and bright addition to our historic downtown and really set the mood for the 2009 holiday season,” said Glaze. Over the past five years, some of the other community projects sponsored by the Starkville Civic League include: purchasing urns and landscaping with plants at the University Drive entrance of Odd Fellows Cemetery, contributing to the purchase of the Old Main clock on Main Street, making financial contributions to Claire’s Bears, Firemen’s Park, Habitat for Humanity, Crisis Pregnancy Center, Safe Haven Abuse Center, and Oktibbeha County Humane Society just to name a few. The banners were strategically installed today in preparation for Starkville’s Christmas Open House this Sunday beginning at noon.
