A local church will hold a concert featuring gospel recording artist evangelist Myrna Summers next Saturday.
Peter’s Rock Temple Church of God In Christ’s Mass Choir will present “Live In Worship” featuring the award-winning artist Nov. 14 at 6 p.m., organizers said in a statement. Admission is free and open to the public.
“The mission of the Peter’s Rock Music Ministry is to set an atmosphere of expectancy and reverence. This will be a night of worship, praise and adoration. The Mass Choir along with Evangelist Myrna Summers will present melody songs; which sets the tone for the Holy Spirit to release his presence,” said Jackie Davis who serves as the director of the Music Ministry.
Summers is known for her timeless classics: such as; “We’re Gonna Make It,” “Un-cloudy Day,” “I Found Jesus,” “Magnify Him” and “So Glad I’m Here.” She has recorded with such artists as the late Rev. Timothy Wright and O’lando Draper.
Summers is the minister of music at Reid Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church in Glenn Dale, Md., leading the church’s five choirs and orchestra and its Mass Choir.
Prior to joining and assuming her duties at the church in 1999, she was minister of music at Refreshing Spring Church of God In Christ in Riverdale, Md.
Organizers supplied background material on Summers from her Web site.
Summers, a Washington, D.C. native, has performed professionally for more than four decades in the United States and Europe.
She was nominated for Grammy Awards for her original compositions “God Gave Me a Song” and “Give Me Something to Hold on To.” In 1970, she received the Mahalia Jackson Award. Summers obtained a Stellar Award in 1989 for Best Traditional Gospel Artist (Female).
She has performed at Madison Square Garden in New York; The Apollo Theatre in New York; The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; The Lincoln Center in New York; and in London, England and Frankfurt, Germany.
She has also performed for the USO, Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow Coalition Prayer Breakfast, and at numerous church services and programs across the nation and abroad.
“Mountain Get Out of My Way” – her latest recording effort with the Reid Temple A.M.E. Mass Choir, was released in December 2006. Earlier in her career she worked for Atlantic Records and Savoy Records as a songwriter and performing artist.
She said her goal is “to raise the spiritual consciousness of men, women, boys, and girls through the presentation of evangelistic gospel music, hopefully bringing about spiritual conviction that would lead to the acceptance of Jesus Christ.”
She founded G.U.T.S.A.Y. (Gospel United to Save All Youth) and her interests include reading and writing. She graduated from McKinley Tech High School in the District of Columbia and attended the University of Maryland and the Toutorsky Academy of Music in Washington, D.C.
Organizers say Pastor Joseph Hawkins and the family of Peter’s Rock extend a cordial invitation for everyone to share this evening of praise, worship and exaltation. For information, call 323-5119.
