• Hunter Safety class set — A hunter education class is set from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Amy Tuck Building at Oktibbeha County Lake. Pre-register by calling (662) 840-5172. Sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, the class is free. • SCT’s Rising Stars — Starkville Community Theatre will host its next Rising Stars Workshop on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Playhouse on Main featuring workshops with Paula Mabry and Simone Cotrell. This is will be the last workshop of 2009. The next workshop will be held Feb. 6 and focus on performance skills in the areas of movement and improvisation. No Rising Stars workshop will be held in January since the first Saturday of the month falls so close to New Year’s Day. • Christmas Bazaar to benefit Habitat for Humanity — The fourth annual Christmas Bazaar sponsored by First United Methodist Church will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Christian Life Center of the church. Artisans from across Mississippi will be offering jewelry, pottery, yard art, paintings, frames, etc. Frozen casseroles and baked goods will be available for purchase. The event is open to the public. Call 323-5722 for information. • Pioneer Day set — The Friends of Noxubee Refuge will hold Pioneer Day on from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday outside the Refuge Visitor Center. The smell of dutch-oven cooking mingled with smoke from a fire will invite you to the days of the pioneers. Visitors will be able to try their hand at trades of the old days in the course of pioneer skill demonstrations, such as bowl carving, shingle making, spinning, quilting, candle dipping, butter making, using a cross-cut saw, throwing tomahawks, making a toy canoe or cutting a reed or feather quill. What used to be Choctaw Territory was settled in the 1800s by farmers and plantation owners. During the great depression, more then 100 impoverished homesteaders and farmers were forced to relocate, after most of the fertile soil had eroded. The Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge was created in 1940 from lands acquired by the Resettlement Administration. • Casserole Kitchen to serve lunch — The Casserole Kitchen serves hot, nutritionous meals to anyone in need at no charge. All who are in need of a hot, home-cooked meal are welcome. Dinner is served from 11:30 a.m. to noon Saturday in the Fellowship Hall (ground floor) of First Presbyterian Church, located at 307 University Drive, in Starkville. These meals are prepared, served and donated by volunteers as a ministry from churches in Starkville and Oktibbeha County. For more information, call 312-9229. • Yard Sale set — Adaton United Methodist Church will hold its annual church-wide yard sale on Saturday in the fellowship hall of the church. Doors open at 7 a.m. Bargains available include furniture, toys, clothing, household items and holiday decorations. • Sodas for Siblings class set at OCH — A Sodas for Siblings class will be taught 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Oktibbeha County Hospital Educational Facility. The course teaches future brothers and sisters how to diaper a new baby, what to expect from the new member in their family, and how to adjust to the changes their family will undergo with a new baby. Participants will receive a Big Brother or Big Sister T-shirt and certificate, and refreshments will be served. The course fee is $20 for one sibling and $15 for each additional one. The class is free to children whose parents are enrolled in the Stork Support class. Dance steps will be demonstrated and taught each week to new members. • Starkville Duplicate Bridge Club — Duplicate bridge will be played at 1 p.m. every Monday on the ladies parlor on the ground level of the First Methodist Church. The bridge games are open to the public. A minimal fee will be charged. To reach the Center, from Highway 12, turn left onto Industrial Park Road at the National Guard Armory. Go three-fourths of a mile, and turn right onto Miley Drive. Call 324-1965 for information. • Parent and Tot Water Class set — Parent and Tot Water class is offered at the Wellness Connection on Mondays at 5 p.m. and Thursdays at 10 a.m. It’s a 30 minute long class that teaches tots some preswimming skills and gets them used t o being in the water. Dads, moms and grandparents are welcome to bring kids 6 months to 3 years old. Kids have to wear swim diapers and one does not have to be the member of the Wellness Connection, just ask for Parent and Tot card at the front desk and then get it punched on the days you can make it to the class. The focus of the forum will be understanding Mississippi’s new achievement and accountability model in preparation for the release of the new school and district labels later this month and what it means for students, teachers, and administrators in Mississippi’s public schools and the communities who support those schools and school districts. During the forum, the Starkville School District’s administrative team will address each of the three components of the model and how the components are being used to determine ratings for schools and districts. • Family Leadership Academy — This unique training program, sponsored by Starkville School District and REACH-MS, is designed to provide assistance to families in developing skills necessary to become leaders in schools, effective systems change advocates, and to support learning at home. no later than Nov. 13. • Grandparents are Great class scheduled at OCH —A Grandparents are Great class will be held Nov. 21, from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Oktibbeha County Hospital Educational Facility. The course brings grandparents up-to-date on the latest in infant care, such as nutrition, safety, and educational play ideas. It also includes a tour of the hospital’s labor and delivery, nursery and postpartum areas. It is offered once each quarter. The fee is $10 per grandparent, and pre-registration is required.
