Jeff Alonzo Peay

Jeff Alonzo Peay, 91, of Maben passed away Friday, Nov. 6, 2009 at the Oktibbeha County Hospital after an extended illness.
He was born in Cedar Bluff on Jan.3, 1918, to Maggie Louise Gaston Oakley Peay and Creyton Bell Peay. He was married for 49 years to Minnie V. Archibald Peay and after her death he married and is survived by Emma Dean Catledge Peay of Louisville.
He attended West Union Presbyterian Church in Louisville. He was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church where he was an ordained deacon and Sunday school teacher.
Before becoming a member of Center Grove Baptist Church, he was chairman of the deacons, Training Union and Sunday school teacher at Double Springs Baptist Church.
He was a 100 percent disabled veteran of World War II. He was discharged on May 8, 1945 from the United States Army as a sergeant in Special Services.
He was a .30-caliber rifle and demolition expert. He served his country 4 years, 11 months and 17 days. He was one of five brothers from Oktibbeha County that served at the same time in World War II.
He was a master carpenter and plumber and also served for many years on the Oktibbeha County Election Commission. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors.
He was a writer and had articles published for 25 years in Mississippi Hunting and Fishing News, News Press, and The Maben Press. His longest running articles were called “Fishing Around.”
He was a great storyteller and entertained his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren for hours with fabulous stories.
He was a world traveler as well as a local farmer for many years. He was involved in 4-H Clubs and enjoyed many years of coaching from Little League to American Legion baseball.  He loved working with and influencing young people. 
Jeff is survived by his two sisters, Kathleen Grafton of Milton, Florida and Annis Goss of Clarksdale, and one brother, James C. Peay of Starkville. He was preceded in death by his sisters Blanche Hodges and Emily Odom and brothers Frank Oakley, Marion Oakley, John Oakley and Joe Peay.
He is survived by his sons, Gene Peay (Sandra) of Huntsville, Ala., and Dale Peay (Karen) of Starkville; and daughter, LaDonna Thompson (Jim) of Starkville; grandsons Jefferson Peay of Park City, Utah, James Peay (Kelly) of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Brent Thompson of Starkville; granddaughter, Elizabeth Thompson of Starkville; and three great-grandchildren, Alex and Austin Peay of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Kylee Peay of Los Angeles, Calif.  He is also survived by his step-children, Diane Schmitz, Susan Younger and Jill Johns; and step-grandchildren, Nicole McKenzie, Paul Younger and special grandchild, Lauren Fulton.
Visitation for Mr. Peay will be held on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home.  The funeral will immediately follow at 2 p.m. in the Welch Funeral Home chapel and will be conducted by the Rev. Steve Lammons.  Burial will follow in the Double Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons Jeff Peay, Jimmy Peay, Brent Thompson, son-in-law Jim Thompson, Brad McKenzie and Steve Corhern.
