Artisans from across Mississippi will be offering jewelry, pottery, yard art, paintings, frames, etc. Frozen casseroles and baked goods will be available for purchase. Call 323-5722 for information. • Pioneer Day set — The Friends of Noxubee Refuge will hold Pioneer Day on from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday outside the Refuge Visitor Center. The smell of dutch-oven cooking mingled with smoke from a fire will invite you to the days of the pioneers. Visitors will be able to try their hand at trades of the old days in the course of pioneer skill demonstrations, such as bowl carving, shingle making, spinning, quilting, candle dipping, butter making, using a cross-cut saw, throwing tomahawks, making a toy canoe or cutting a reed or feather quill. What used to be Choctaw Territory was settled in the 1800s by farmers and plantation owners. During the great depression, more then 100 impoverished homesteaders and farmers were forced to relocate, after most of the fertile soil had eroded. The Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge was created in 1940 from lands acquired by the Resettlement Administration. • Yard Sale set — Adaton United Methodist Church will hold its annual church-wide yard sale on Saturday in the fellowship hall of the church. Doors open at 7 a.m. Bargains available include furniture, toys, clothing, household items and holiday decorations. • Sodas for Siblings class set at OCH — A Sodas for Siblings class will be taught 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Oktibbeha County Hospital Educational Facility. The course teaches future brothers and sisters how to diaper a new baby, what to expect from the new member in their family, and how to adjust to the changes their family will undergo with a new baby. Participants will receive a Big Brother or Big Sister T-shirt and certificate, and refreshments will be served. The course fee is $20 for one sibling and $15 for each additional one. The class is free to children whose parents are enrolled in the Stork Support class. The course brings grandparents up-to-date on the latest in infant care, such as nutrition, safety, and educational play ideas. It also includes a tour of the hospital’s labor and delivery, nursery and postpartum areas. It is offered once each quarter. The fee is $10 per grandparent, and pre-registration is required. • JROTC Federal inspection this week — The Starkville High School (SHS) Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) will be undergoing Federal inspection this week. The goal is to achieve the title Honor Unit with Distinction which has become tradition at Starkville High School. In order to achieve this rating the inspection grade must be 99.2 percent or higher (595 of 600 possible points). This tradition is a great achievement because very few JROTC units in the nation achieve this level of proficiency. Parents are invited and encouraged to attend and help with the inspection. • Cheese sales under way — The Starkville Exchange Club is again selling its famous cheese for the holiday season. Available varieties of cheese include mild and sharp cheddar (2 lb. blocks), jalapeno (12 oz blocks), and old granddad (aged cheddar, 2.5 lb. wheels).
