All “Around Town” announcements are published as a community service on a first-come, first-served basis and as space allows. Announcements will be published a minimum of three times and may be printed additional times if space allows.
Announcements must be 60 words or less, written in complete sentences and submitted in writing at least three days prior to the requested dates of publication.  Longer announcements will be published if space allows. No announcements will be taken over the telephone.

Today

• Move and Flow aerobics classes at the Sportsplex — Move and Flow aerobics classes set for 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Sportsplex. Call the Starkville Parks and Recreation Department for pricing and more information.
• Rotary Club to meet — Rotary District Governor Chuck Jordan will be this week’s guest at the Starkville Rotary Club.
Jordan, a long-time Rotarian from Greenville, heads District 6820 which includes  Starkville and 43 other Rotary clubs in central Mississippi communities. Rotary meets each Monday from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Starkville Country Club.
• Book sale set — A book sale will be held at the Starkville Public Library from noon to 6 p.m. today.  
Reductions to the already low prices will apply to selected hardback books: history, biographies, large print, diet/health, and fiction.   Sale sponsor, Friends of the Library, welcomes book donations and these may be made during regular library hours.  Books are to be left at the lower library level and receipts obtained from the Circulation Desk.
Those who cannot attend sale day may find interesting book selections in the “50 cent room” located on the lower level of the library.  This is open during regular library hours. Sale proceeds are used for the support of special library projects.
• Park Commission meeting set — The Starkville Parks and Recreation Commission will hold its regular monthly meeting at the multi-purpose facility at noon today on 405 Lynn Lane. The public is welcome to attend.
 • Line dancing classes set — Line dancing classes are set for Mondays at 1 p.m. at the Sportsplex. Dance steps will be demonstrated and taught each week to new members.
• Starkville Duplicate Bridge Club — Duplicate bridge will be played at 1 p.m. every Monday on the ladies parlor on the ground level of the First Methodist Church.

• Senior Enrichment Center Activities set — Today at the Senior Enrichment Center, enjoy visiting all day. At 10 a.m., a “Second Cup”for men only will be held – coffee and donuts will be served. At 1:30 p.m., walk in and play bridge.
To reach the Center, from Highway 12, turn left onto Industrial Park Road at the National Guard Armory. Go three-fourths of a mile, and turn right onto Miley Drive.

• Active Parenting classes held — Elmarie Carr Brooks will lead the Active Parenting classes from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at Emerson Family Center. For registration and information, contact the Emerson Family  Center at 324-4155.
• Starkville Cemetery Association to meet — The annual meeting of the Starkville Cemetery Association will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at First Baptist Church in the Applegate Building, Rooms 114 and 115 — use the Washington Street entrance.This is an important meeting so please plan to attend.
• AARP Safe Driver Course set —The Senior Center on Miley Drive in Starkville will sponsor an AARP Safe Driver class today from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. in The Center’s Auxiliary Room. Registration will begin 30 minutes prior to the starting time.

• Parent and Tot Water Class set — Parent and Tot Water class is offered at the Wellness Connection on Mondays at 5 p.m. and Thursdays at 10 a.m. It’s a 30-minute class that teaches tots some preswimming skills and gets them used to being in the water. Dads, moms and grandparents are welcome to bring kids 6 months to 3 years old.
Kids have to wear swim diapers and one does not have to be the member of the Wellness Connection, just ask for Parent and Tot card at the front desk and then get it punched on the days you can make it to the class. For information, call Kate Fabel  at 324-2899.
• Adult Praise Flag class set — An Adult Praise Flag class is set for 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday’s at the Sportsplex Activities Room. Fees are $35 per month.
• Pilot Club to meet — The regular meeting for the Starkville Pilot Club will be today at 6 p.m.  The meeting will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn.

Tuesday

• Eye screening set — The Starkville Lion’s Club will be conducting an eye screening November 3 at East Oktibbeha County Elementary School, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and continuing until 1:30 p.m.
• Senior Enrichment Center activities set — On Tuesday at noon at the Senior Enrichment Center, bring a favorite “easy-to-prepare” dish — along with the recipe — for a potluck lunch.

• Energy Efficiency Expo set — Those looking for ways to save energy and save money on power bills will want to attend the 4-County Energy Efficiency Expo.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Nov. 3 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the East Mississippi Community College in Mayhew and is designed to help people learn all about energy efficiency.

• Casserole Kitchen to serve dinner — The Casserole Kitchen serves hot, nutritionous meals to anyone in need at no charge. All who are in need of a hot, homecooked meal are welcome
Dinner is served from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Fellowship Hall (ground floor) of First Presbyterian Church, located at 307 University Drive, in Starkville.
These meals are prepared, served and donated by volunteers as a ministry from churches in Starkville and Oktibbeha County.

• Lincoln Panel set at the Sportsplex — On Tuesday at 7 p.m.  at the Sportsplex, Starkville Reads, in cooperation with the Golden Triangle Civil War Roundtable, is sponsoring a panel of knowledgeable Civil War experts discussing  “Abraham Lincoln Revisited.”
Join Bill Parrish, John Marszalek,  Michael Ballard and Duffy Neubauer as they discuss Abraham Lincoln from a variety of perspectives including his background, his marriage,  his personality, his presidency and his greatness.

Wednesday

• M’Lady Garden Club to meet — The M’Lady Garden Club will meet in the home of Marilyn Laird at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. The program, “Holiday Arrangements,” will be presented by Haze Allsup of The Flower Company. Hostesses will include Sara Crow, Edna Jean Gunn, Ruth Remy and Wanda Thorne.

• SDN Book Club to meet — The SDN Book Club will meet at noon Wednesday at the Starkville Daily News conference room. This month’s book is “Silas Marner.” Newcomers are welcome and snacks are encouraged, but not required.
• Clover Leaf Garden Club to meet — Martha Vaughn will be the hostess for today’s meeting of the Clover Leaf Garden Club, that will meet at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Barnhill’s Restaurant.
• Green Thumb Garden Club to meet — The Green Thumb Garden Club will meet Wednesday at 2 p.m., in the Mississippi Room at Cadence Bank.  Monti King of Flowers by the Bunch will demonstrate holiday arrangements.  Hostesses are Wingfield Bouchard and Mary Jo Wallace.
• Diabetes Support Group meeting set — OCH’s Diabetes Support Group will meet Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the hospital’s educational facility. This month’s topic will be “All about the Flu and Flu Shots.”

• Yoga classes set for the Sportsplex — Yoga classes are being held Wednesday nights  from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. at the Sportsplex. Fees are $65 for an 8-week session.
• Debtors Anonymous to meet — Does this sound like you?  Poor saving habits. Not planning for taxes, retirement or other not-recurring but predictable items, and then feeling surprised when they come due; a “live for today, don’t worry about tomorrow” attitude.” If so, help is available:  Debtors Anonymous is a 12-step program for people with problems with money or debt.

Thursday

• Starkville Downtown Toastmasters to meet — The Starkville Downtown Toastmasters will meet at 7 a.m. at the Comfort Inn and Suites.  If you are interested in improving your public speaking ability, drop in and attend a Toastmasters meeting. 
Toastmasters provides an excellent venue for developing and polishing your skills in a very supportive and entertaining environment.
• AARP to honor war veterans — The Starkville chapter of AARP will meet on Thursday at 9 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church. 
The AARP Boys Choir will honor U.S. war veterans by singing the “Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.” 
Retired public school teacher and AARP member Clarice Larry  will introduce the speaker, Mississippi Highway Patrolman Brian Mobley.  The devotional will be given by Jean Daniel, and Margaret Weining’s committee will provide refreshments.  Guests are welcome. • Town and Country Garden Club to meet — Town and Country Garden Club, Garden Clubs of Mississippi, Inc., will meet at the home of Marilyn Tabor on Thursday at 9:30 a.m.
The cohost will be Genevieve Swartsberg, and Janey Margaret Gratz, author of “Wildflower Watch” and a writer for the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, will present a program on Mississippi Wildflowers.
• Happy Hoopers to meet — The Happy Hoopers will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Sportsplex. Participants should bring their own work.
• Senior Enrichment Center Activities set — On Thursday at the Senior Enrichment Center, enjoy a devotional time at 10:30 a.m., and at 2 p.m., bring a friend and play dominoes.
• DAR to meet — The Hic-A-Sha-Ba-Ha chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution will hold its November meeting on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Mississippi Room at Cadence Bank.  
The patriotic program will salute our nation’s veterans.  Hostesses are chairman June Carpenter, Jean Geiger and Dorothy Nagel.

• Line dancing classes set — Line dancing classes are set for Thursdays at 7 p.m. at the Sportsplex. Steps will be shown each week to new members.
• Dawg Talk set — Eat With Us and Coach Dan Mullen at Dawg Talk every Thursday at Harveys from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Bulldog Room. Enjoy prizes, good food and up close and personal football talk with Head Coach Dan Mullen. Reservations are not available. Tables are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Seating begins at 6:30 p.m.

Friday

• MSU Women’s Club to meet — The MSU Women’s Club October meeting will be held Friday at the Starkville Country Club with bridge at 9:30 a.m. and lunch ($10) at 11:30 a.m.
The program, “Holiday Decorating”, will be presented by Lynette McDougald, Manager of the University Florist at Mississippi State University. Several floral arrangements donated by the University Florist will be available for auction with the proceeds to benefit the MSU Women’s Club’s scholarship fund.
Members should make reservations to Connie Myers at 324-5601 by Monday indicating their participation in bridge and/or lunch and if a guest is to be included.
• Senior Center activities set — At 2 p.m. Friday, join the Senior Enrichment Center “walking club” at the Sportsplex. Remember: Everyone in town wears maroon on Fridays to support the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Saturday

• Hunter Safety class set — A hunter education class is set from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Amy Tuck Building at Oktibbeha County Lake. Pre-register by calling (662) 840-5172. Sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, the class is free.
• Pioneer Day set — The Friends of Noxubee Refuge will hold Pioneer Day on from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday outside the Refuge Visitor Center.
The smell of dutch-oven cooking mingled with smoke from a fire will invite you to the days of the pioneers.  Visitors will be able to try their hand at trades of the old days in the course of pioneer skill demonstrations, such as bowl carving, shingle making, spinning, quilting, candle dipping, butter making, using a cross-cut saw, throwing tomahawks, making a toy canoe or cutting a reed or feather quill.
What used to be Choctaw Territory was settled in the 1800s by farmers and plantation owners.
During the great depression, more then 100 impoverished homesteaders and farmers were forced to relocate, after most of the fertile soil had eroded.  The Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge was created in 1940 from lands acquired by the Resettlement Administration.
• Yard Sale set — Adaton United Methodist Church will hold its annual church-wide yard sale on Saturday in the fellowship hall of the church.  Doors open at 7 a.m. Bargains available include furniture, toys, clothing, household items and holiday decorations.
• Sodas for Siblings class set at OCH — A Sodas for Siblings class will be taught 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Oktibbeha County Hospital Educational Facility.
The course teaches future brothers and sisters how to diaper a new baby, what to expect from the new member in their family, and how to adjust to the changes their family will undergo with a new baby.  
Participants will receive a Big Brother or Big Sister T-shirt and certificate, and refreshments will be served. The course fee is $20 for one sibling and $15 for each additional one. The class is free to children whose parents are enrolled in the Stork Support class.  To enroll a child, call 615-3364.
• Small Child Contest and Fashion Show set — A Small Child Contest and Fashion Show will be held  at 3 p.m. Saturday at Rogers and Johnson Community Center(COCO Center) sponsored by the Council of Community Organizations of Oktibbeha County. On the horizon

• Town and Country Garden Club Holiday Bazaar set — The Town and Country Garden Club’s Garden Clubs of Mississippi, Inc., annual holiday bazaar will be held Nov. 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; lunch will be served from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church.
Vendors will be selling artwork, pottery, wooden bowls, jewelry, vintage handbags, handmade swap, hand sewn aprons and food for the holidays.
Proceeds are used to fund various projects that benefit the people of our community and state.
• Red Cross certification classes set — The Oktibbeha County chapter of the American Red Cross will offer Adult CPR on Nov. 17, Standard First Aid on Nov. 19, and Infant/Child CPR on Nov. 24. • Grandparents are Great class scheduled at OCH —A Grandparents are Great class will be held Nov. 21 from 9 until 11 a.m. in the Oktibbeha County Hospital Educational Facility.
The course brings grandparents up-to-date on the latest in infant care, such as nutrition, safety, and educational play ideas.  It also includes a tour of the hospital’s labor and delivery, nursery and postpartum areas.
It is offered once each quarter. The fee is $10 per grandparent, and pre-registration is required. For more information or to enroll, call 615-3364.
