• Move and Flow aerobics classes at the Sportsplex — “Move and Flow aerobics” classes are set from 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Sportsplex. Call the Starkville Parks and Recreation Department for pricing and more information. • AARP Safe Driver class set — First United Methodist Church in Starkville will sponsor an AARP Safe Driver class on Friday from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Room 2003. Registration will begin 30 minutes prior to the starting time. The church is located at 200 Lampkin St. and can be reached by phone at 323-5722 for further directions. The course is open to persons of all ages but Mississippi law requires that one’s insurance company give some kind of discount for drivers 55 and over. Discounts for ages below 55 are available but individuals should contact their insurance agents for specific details. Pre-registration is not required. • Senior Center open — At 2 p.m. Friday, join the Senior Enrichment Center “walking club” at the Sportsplex. Remember: Everyone in town wears maroon on Fridays to support the Mississippi State Bulldogs. To reach the Center, from Highway 12, turn left onto Industrial Park Road at the National Guard Armory. Go three-fourths of a mile, and turn right onto Miley Drive. The center is located in the Golden Triangle Planning and Development District building is on the right. Call 324-1965 for information. • Weatherization Day in the Park set — Prairie Opportunity Inc. presents “Weatherization Day In The Park” on Friday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at McKee Park, on Lynn Lane, in Starkville. The event is open to the public with refreshments and door prizes given away. There will be presentations by many vendors on this day to give you information on weatherization and to answer any questions. • We Care Celebration set — Organizers will host a fifth anniversary celebration for the We Care Committee and LueZarah Robinson Health Care Services on Friday at the Starkville Piggly Wiggly beginning at 8 a.m. The store is a drop off point for a related canned food drive, which continues through Oct. 24. • Book signing at the Book Mart — Cartoonist Andy B. Childress of Bubbaworldcomix.com will be signing artist editions of his three new books from 4 to 5 p.m. Friday at the Book Mart on Main in Starkville. Shane Sullivan, writer of the “half the Horror” graphic novel will also be present. • WOCES Fall Festival set — West Oktibbeha County Elementary School will hold their Fall Festival “Learning Luau” from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in the school gym. There will be face painting, a cake walk, bingo, musical chairs, inflatable jumpers and more. Prizes will be awarded. Hot dogs, drinks, chips and other snacks will be sold in the concession stand with all proceeds going toward the PTO for future events. • Registration deadline — The 12th Annual Turkey Trot 5K and Canned Food Drive will be held Nov. 21 at 8 a.m. The race will begin and end in front of the Sanderson Center on the campus of MSU. A $15 registration fee and guarantee of shirt size on race day by Friday and $20 after Friday, plus three canned goods. Register in the Membership Services Office in the Sanderson Center, call 325-7244 for more details. All canned goods will be donated to local Golden Triangle food banks. • Hannah Pote Run for Education set — The 19th Annual 5K Run and one-mile fun run/walk is set for 8 a.m. Saturday. The event is sponsored by The Starkville Clinic for Women. All proceeds will benefit the Starkville School District. Sponsored by the Oktoc Garden Club, the Oktoc Country Store includes Brunswick stew lunches and bulk stew, homemade country kitchen bakery items, local musical talents, Grandma’s Attic, a handmade quilt raffle, Farmer’s Market featuring local produce, and the opportunity to share in the community spirit of Oktoc. • “Tri-CAR-Treat” Car Show set for Saturday —Rev up your engines for the first Car Show held on Mississippi State’s campus. The Campus Activities Board will host cars, trucks, and motorcycles on campus Saturday. The show will include car clubs from around the state. In addition, MSU students, faculty, and guests can enjoy delicious food, great music, a ladies raffle, and appearances by Miss MSU and Bully. Kids, bring a bucket for “Tri-car-treat” at the vehicles! You will not want to miss this fun-filled, family-friendly, and FREE event. The cars will be on display in the parking lot at the corner of Stone Boulevard and Bully Boulevard, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, contact the Campus Activities Board at 325-2930. • Casserole Kitchen to serve lunch — The Casserole Kitchen serves hot, nutritionous meals to anyone in need at no charge. All who are in need of a hot, homecooked meal are welcome! These meals are prepared, served and donated by volunteers as a ministry from churches in Starkville and Oktibbeha County. King Center at 700 Long St in Starkville. Call the Starkville Parks and Recreation Department for pricing and more information. • Rotary Club to meet — Rotary District Governor Chuck Jordan will be this week’s guest at Starkville Rotary Club. Jordan, a long-time Rotarian from Greenville, heads District 6820 which includes Starkville and 43 other Rotary clubs in central Mississippi communities. Rotary meets each Monday from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Starkville Country Club. • Book sale set — A book sale will be held at the Starkville Public Library from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Reductions to the already low prices will apply to selected hardback books: history, biographies, large print, diet/health, and fiction. Sale sponsor, Friends of the Library, welcomes book donations and these may be made during regular library hours. Books are to be left at the lower library level and receipts obtained from the Circulation Desk. Persons who cannot attend sale day may find interesting book selections in the “50 cent room” located on the lower level of library. This is open during regular library hours. Sale proceeds are used for the support of special library projects. • Park Commission meeting set — The Starkville Parks and Recreation Commission will hold its regular monthly meeing at the multi-purpose facilty at noon Monday on 405 Lynn Lane. The public is welcome to attend. • Line dancing classes set — Line dancing classes are set for Mondays at 1 p.m. at the Sportsplex. Dance steps will be demonstrated and taught each week to new members. • Starkville Duplicate Bridge Club — Duplicate bridge will be played at 1 p.m. every Monday on the ladies parlor on the ground level of the First Methodist Church. Kids have to wear swim diapers and one does not have to be the member of the Wellness Connection, just ask for Parent and Tot card at the front desk and then get it punched on the days you can make it to the class. The event will feature booths where local companies will demonstrate energy efficient items and services.
