New songwriters group to hold initial meeting
Thursday, 15 October 2009
For the Daily News

All aspiring songwriters are invited to take part in the first meeting of the Golden Triangle Songwriters Group this weekend in Starkville.
The meeting will take place Saturday at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Starkville, located at 106 E. Lampkin St. Songwriters of all genres are welcome.
“It’s a new group devoted to providing an arena and platform for songwriters to gather together to hone their craft. It’s for lyricists and tune writers or anyone interested in the popular style of music,” said Tom Jenkins, who is facilitating the group. “Members are free to contribute and critique others’ works, share suggestions and learn from each other.”
For the first meeting, organizers say they are thrilled to have multiple-award-winning songwriter and artist Shelly E. Johnson as the guest.
Johnson will be available to answer questions and share her experiences and wisdom from her successful career in Nashville. Born and raised in Marietta, Ga., Johnson is a Nashville-based Christian artist, worship leader and songwriter with a deep devotion to her Creator and a desire to share Him with others.
Raised in a strong Christian home, it wasn’t until the age of fourteen when Johnson’s father tragically died from cancer that Johnson met God for the very first time in a real and personal way.
It was during that experience that Johnson began writing songs and felt God’s calling on her life to ministry.
In 2003, Johnson moved to Nashville to attend Belmont University, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in commercial music.
In September 2007, she co-produced and released her first independent album entitled Wash It Away, comprised of 10 original songs.
In August 2008, Johnson attended the Gospel Music Association’s Music in the Rockies Seminar, where her song “That’s the Power of the Cross” was awarded the 2008 Song of the Year and her song “Draw Near” was awarded Scripture Song of the Year.
In June, Johnson released her second album entitled Mosaic of Grace, comprised of 11 new original songs. In August, she was awarded the National Winner in the Gospel Music Association’s Immerse National Artist Competition and continues to experience growing momentum as God opens new doors for ministry.
For information about the group, contact Tom Jenkins at 324-4969.
