Dr. Lynne Richardson, left, MSU United Way campaign chair, and Leslie Corey, third from left, this year’s United Way president, accept a $12,340 check from Blake Jeter, left, MSU SA president, and Dr. Mark Keenum, MSU president, symbolizing the Student Association’s gift to this year’s campaign. SDN Staff Reports The annual fund-raising campaign for the United Way of North Central Mississippi is inching its way toward the 10 percent level of its $400,000 goal. As of Friday, the campaign was at $29,437.50 or 7.4 percent of the goal, reports United Way Executive Director Jerry King. “Many of our campaigns are just now beginning. We look forward to a better report this time next week,” said King last week. “Our financial institutions are having their meetings this week and next week. We also received our annual gift from TVA of $5,000.” The TVA check was presented by Customer Service Manager Terry Kemp. The Mississippi State University Student Association recently raised $12,340 for the United Way of North Central Mississippi. The donation was generated through the sale of “True Maroon” T-shirts which raised $5,000 and the $7,430 in pledges from students who texted donations through their cell phones during Bulldog Bash. A portion of the money through the text message donations is going to defray the cost of setting up the service.
The largest amount ever raised by the Student Association, the proceeds will benefit 18 United Way agencies in Oktibbeha, Choctaw, Webster, and Winston counties. The local United Way helps support these agencies with funding: • American Red Cross, Oktibbeha County chapter. • Area Agency on Aging/ Fellowship Foods/Homemaker Service. • Boy Scouts of America. • Boys and Girls Club of Oktibbeha County. • Brickfire Project. • CONTACT Helpline. • The Father’s Child Ministries. • 4-H Clubs. • Girl Scouts of Northeast Mississippi. • Habitat for Humanity. • Helping Hands Ministries of Oktibbeha County. • North Mississippi Kidney Foundation. • Oktibbeha County Humane Society. • Prairie Opportunity Inc. • Recovery House Inc. • Salvation Army. • Safe Haven/The Rape Crisis Center. • Sally Kate Winters Children’s Home. Members of the public have multiple choices in deciding to give to the United Way campaign, including: • Payroll deduction — If one’s employer has the capability of doing this option, the donor may elect to have a certain amount of money from each paycheck be donated to the United Way for a certain number of pay periods. • Donation by cash or check — A donor may make a one-time cash or check donation. • Credit card — A donor can choose to make a one-time or monthly donation via a specific credit card. • Participation in special United Way events — The upcoming Festival of Trees will allow the public an opportunity to make donations toward the United Way campaign, and the recent MSU Bulldog Bash saw money generated for the campaign For more information about making contributions to United Way, call 323-3830 or stop by the offices at 1016G Louisville St. Pledge forms are also available at the front desk at the Starkville Daily News offices at 304 E.
