Author to share latest book in Eupora Saturday
Wednesday, 16 September 2009
John M. Floyd, an Attala County native and a graduate of Mississippi State University, will sign copies of his latest mystery/suspense short story collection, Midnight (Dogwood Press, 2008), at the Bly Center on Saturday, September 19 at 2  p.m. First-edition, signed copies will be available for $22.95 plus tax.
Floyd, who won the 2007 Derringer Award for his short story, “Four For Dinner” (Seven by Seven, Wolfmont Press, 2006), has praised by a trio of big names. Bestselling Mississippi author Nevada Barr said, “If John Floyd were dead, he would be known as one of the preeminent short story writers of the 21st century. Fortunately for us, he’s alive and his mind is full of stories.”
Steve Hamilton, who wrote Night Work and the Alex McKnight mysteries, said, “The one thing these stories all have in common is the perfect storyteller’s touch.” Douglas Preston, who has co-authored with Lincoln Child and penned The Monster of Florence and Blasphemy on his own, said, “Midnight is a haunting collection of stories, each one with a surprise trick of light, a glimmering twist, at the end.”
“Midnight offers up 30 more reasons why John Floyd is the master of short story suspense,” said J.C. Patterson in the Clarion Ledger. “Quick, fun and tipped with venom, Floyd’s potent parables would give Mr. Hitchcock a reason to chuckle.”
“I’m mighty excited about the book, which is another batch of 30 mystery/suspense stories,” Floyd said. His first collection, Rainbow’s End, was published by Dogwood Press in 2006. “There are police procedurals, nostalgia, westerns, humor, and more. Just about every story has a little twist at the end. That’s one of the things I love about writing short fiction.”
Floyd, a former Air Force captain, worked for IBM Corporation for 30 years. He began writing professionally in 1994 and has published over 700 stories and fillers in widely-read publications like Woman’s World and Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. He teaches creative writing at Millsaps College’s Enrichment Program in Jackson.
“John is a fantastic writer and an even better person,” said Joe Lee, owner of Dogwood Press and the author of the new suspense thriller, The Magnolia Triangle (Dogwood Press, 2009).
Admission is free. The Bly Center is located on Main Street in Eupora. Visit www.dogwoodpress.com for more about all Dogwood Press titles.
