Leadership Summit set at MSU Sept. 29-30

Two noted political consultants, a CNN business correspondent and a co-founder of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream are among the keynote speakers scheduled for the third annual Leadership Summit at Mississippi State University.
Sponsored by the MSU College of Business, the Leadership Summit is scheduled for Sept. 29 and 30 on campus, with sessions scheduled at the Hunter Henry Center and at the Colvard Union. The theme for this year’s summit is “Creating the New Economy.”
This year’s summit will examine the changing economy of the state and region and innovative new business ideas, said Lynne Richardson, dean of the College of Business, in a statement on the Summit’s Web site. “The purpose of this year’s conference, ‘Creating the New Economy,’ is both to assess and to support the transition to the entrepreneurial, information rich, sustainable economy that we must achieve in the early days of the 21st century,” Richardson said. “”What are we doing? Is it working? If not, what do we need to do about it?”
Keynote speakers for the summit include:
• James Carville — One of America’s best-known political consultants, Carville has guided numerous politicians to campaign victories in gubernatorial, congressional and presidential races, the most notable being President Bill Clinton in 1992.
Carville, who is also an author, actor, producer, talk show host, speaker and restaurateur, has also served as a regular political commentator and contributor for CNN, along with his wife, Mary Matalin.
• Mary Matalin — Known for her work as a political commentator and as a key official in the administration of President George W. Bush and as a key campaign official for President George H.W. Bush, Matalin is a best-selling author and former host of CNN’s “Crossfire.”
She currently runs Threshold, a new conservative publishing imprint at Simon & Schuster. She is married to Carville, and they have two daughters.
• Jerry Greenfield — Greenfield and long-time friend and business partner Ben Cohen are the co-founders of Ben & Jerry’s Homemade Inc., which began as a store-front venture and has grown into a $300 million ice cream empire known for social responsibility and creative management strengths.
• Kenneth “Hap” Klopp — Founder of the noted outdoor company The North Face, Klopp served as the company’s president and CEO for 20 years, garnering honors as the best managed outdoor industry company and for providing some of the highest quality products of any American company.
After selling The North Face in 1990, Klopp founded HK Consulting, a company focused on creative business strategy, marketing and promotion.
• Dr. Roy H. Ruby — Ruby is known and loved among Mississippi State University students, faculty and alumni, having served in various student affairs position at the People’s University for four decades until retiring in 2004.
The former MSU vice president and College of Education Dean was called back into service at his alma mater as interim president for a brief period in 2008.
Known for his wry wit, Ruby is currently helping the university’s Mitchell Memorial Library’s archives department in collecting a series of oral history interviews with current and former long-time MSU employees.
• Ali Velshi — The senior business correspondent for CNN and host of the network’s weekly business roundtable program, “Your $$$$$,” Velshi is also a regular contributor and anchor for “Issue #1,” the network’s in-depth coverage initiative on the single issue that matters most to the CNN audience.
Based in New York City, Velshi has covered a variety of major business and economic stories for CNN, including the U.S. government’s bailout plan and the financial collapses of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, AIG and Lehman Brothers, as well as the Enron scandal.

• Tommy S. Joseph, senior vice president for manufacturing and technology, International Paper.
• Andrew Mangan, executive director, United States Business Council for Sustainable Development.
• Anthony Topazi, CEO, Mississippi Power.
• Bill Aulet, director, Sloan Entre Center, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
• Liza Looser, CEO, The Cirlot Agency.
• John A. James, chairman and CEO, James Group International.
• Chris Dardaman, CEO and chief investment officer, Brightworth.
• Raghu Krishnamoorthy, vice president, human resources, GE Aviation.
• Regina Regan, information specialist, Mississippi World Trade Center.
• Barbara Travis, executive director, Mississippi World Trade Center.
