A former University of Mississippi football signee and two other men now face trial in connection with a March 1 incident in which they are accused of assaulting a man outside a local fast food restaurant.
Rebel football signee Jamar Jerel Hornsby, 22, of 1700 San Pablo Road, Jacksonville, Fla., has been indicted by the Oktibbeha County Grand Jury on an aggravated assault charge in connection with an early morning March 1 incident at McDonald’s in Starkville in which a man was assaulted using brass knuckles and had to be treated at Oktibbeha County Hospital for his injuries.
Hornsby’s indictment, which had been rumored for a few days, was made public in Oktibbeha County Circuit Court records on Friday. Hornsby waived his right to an arraignment hearing and was released on a $15,000 bond.
UM Head Football Coach Houston Nutt on Friday announced that Hornsby would not be a member of the Rebel football team.
“I am releasing Jamar Hornsby and he will not be a member of our football team,” Nutt said. “We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”
The other suspects in the incident have also been indicted by the Grand Jury. Darrell Cartez Simmons, 19, of 2730 Thornburg Way, College Park, Ga., and Robert Nelson Jordan, 20, of 3710 Northwest 10th Ave., Miami, Fla., who played football with Hornsby at East Mississippi Community College but have since released from the team, were also indicted on aggravated assault charges in the McDonald’s incident.
In the March 1 incident, Hornsby, Simmons and Jordan are accused of attacking a male victim following a minor “rear-ender” accident while Hornsby and his friends and the victim were waiting for service in the drive-through line at McDonald’s at about 2:20 a.m. March 1.
After the accident occurred, both Hornsby and the victim, whose name is not being released by police amid concerns for his safety, pulled their cars over to nearby parking spaces to discuss the minor accident, said Starkville Police Department detectives at the time.
The victim remained seated in his car while Hornsby and the others talked with him. At one point, Hornsby took the victim’s wallet and removed some cash from it, which is what prompted the petit larceny charge, SPD detectives said.
The three then pulled the victim from his car and began beating him with the brass knuckles, which are illegal in Mississippi, detectives said. The entire incident was witnessed by a woman standing nearby who called E-911 operators, then put the victim in her car and followed Hornsby and the other suspects as they left the McDonald’s parking lot.
Police officers stopped Hornsby, Simmons and Jordan just past the intersection of Highway 12 and South Montgomery Street. All three were questioned about the assault incident on March 1, but were not formally charged until March 4. Hornsby, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound defensive back, was an NJCAA second team All-American last year at East Mississippi Community College after spending his freshman season at the University of Florida.
He may also face penalties in his native Florida, where he is on probation after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor credit card charge while on the Gator football team. Hornsby was arrested in May 2007 for making 70 fraudulent charges on a gasoline credit card that had belonged to a UF student killed in a crash in 2006.
