SDN wins 12 awards at MPA

Work by Starkville Daily News staff members was recognized as some of the best among the state’s daily newspapers during the Mississippi Press Association’s annual convention this past weekend in Biloxi.
News and sports staff members won a dozen awards in the MPA’s annual Better Newspaper Contest. The awards given represent work  completed in 2008. The SDN competes against 10 other newspapers in its circulation division. The newspaper’s honors this year included the following:
• Sports Reporter Aaron Seidlitz won a first place award for best sports game story for his coverage of last fall’s Mississippi State-Auburn football game, which the Bulldogs lost 3-2. Seidlitz also was honored with a second place award for best sports news story for his coverage of MSU’s hiring of John Cohen as head baseball coach and retired coach Ron Polk’s reaction.
• Lifestyles Editor Gwen Sisson won a third place award for best lifestyles section for sections focusing on Starkville Reads, the Sturgis All-Bike Motorcycle Rally and the Junior Auxiliary’s annual Christmas projects.
• Sports Editor David Miller, Seidlitz and staff members were honored with a third-place award for best sports section for October 2008 sections focusing both on high school and Mississippi State sports.
• The entire SDN news staff won a third place award for best special section or issue for the 2008 Progress edition, “Issues and Attitudes.” The news staff also won a third place award for best overall design.
• Editor Brian Hawkins and former SDN Reporter Shoshana Brackett won a second place award for best picture-story combination for coverage of U.S. Army Cpl. Taylor McDavid’s funeral in the aftermath of his tragic death in Iraq.
Hawkins also won a third place award for best commentary column and second place awards for best general news photograph,  best editorials, best front page design and for best headline writing.
The 2008 Better Newspaper Contest was judged by members of the Arizona Press Association. A total of 2,643 entries were submitted by the state’s daily and weekly  newspapers.
