A Starkville-based technology firm developing “next-generation” electronic systems celebrated a grand opening of its headquarters Friday with an eye on the future.
Dr. Gary Butler is the president of Camgian Microsystems, which is located in the Multi-Tenant Building in the Thad Cochran Research, Technology and Economic Development Park.
He made brief remarks to the audience gathered outside the company’s Starkville office, which he says is a 7,000-square-foot semiconductor design and engineering facility.
Butler provided additional details after his remarks.

Camgian is an advanced semiconductor solutions company which supports both commercial and government semiconductor engineering and development, Butler said.
“From this work, we develop next-generation electronic systems related to radar, wireless communications and advanced electro-optical sensors,” he said.
It started in 2007 and has 28 employees. It generates an annual economic impact of $8 million.
“This really is a team effort with the community. We want to make Camgian one of the premier technology development companies in the nation and the community’s support is extremely important in making that happen,” Butler said.
In February, the company acquired the Starkville design center of Cypress Semiconductor, a move which saved 15 jobs, and made Starkville its headquarters.
Recent accolades for the company include its:
• Selection as one of eight Edward Lowe Foundation Mississippi Companies to Watch via the Mississippi Technology Alliance.
• Being named one of six Mississippi companies to earn the Governor’s Cup, which recognizes the businesses for achievements in 2008. It was in the small business category, defined as 50 or fewer employees.
Butler thanked U.S. Sens. Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker and U.S. Rep. Gregg Harper, R-Third District, for their support. He also expressed thanks to the Mississippi Development Authority.
Plus, Camgian is a protege of DRS Technologies via a program through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
“Camgian represents the type of industry we want to see as a growth industry in Starkville. We can expect Camgian to grow itself and attract other companies in the high-tech defense contracting industries,” said Greater Starkville Development Partnership President and CEO Jon Maynard.
“Gary is certainly an enthusiastic supporter of this community and willing to put his own personal investment in our future,” Maynard said.
Starkville Mayor-elect Parker Wiseman said he is “very excited that all the pieces came together for this to work out. This is an asset for our community. What it means not only for the community at large” but also the people that are “associated with Camgian is something we should all be excited about.”
As for the future, Butler says: “We hope to significantly grow our presence in Starkville through continued collaboration with the university and our national and international defense partners.”
