For the Daily News Wanting to get your kicks on Route 66? The Starkville Central Neighborhood Foundation (SCNF) will conclude Preservation Month with the showing of “Cars” this Friday night, May 29 on the “green” of Armstrong Middle School in the historic Greensboro Street neighborhood. The movie will begin at sunset or about 7:45 p.m. Route 66 holds a place in American history as one of the first major federal highway projects linking Chicago to Los Angeles. Running through rural communities, it provided farmers with an easier way to get their products to market. During the Depression, thousands of unemployed male youths from virtually every state were put to work as laborers on road gangs to pave the final stretches of the road. As a result of this monumental effort, the Chicago-to-Los Angeles highway was reported as “continuously paved” in 1938. It was a path travelled as many migrant workers travelled to California for work during the Dust Bowl years and facilitated the single greatest wartime manpower mobilization in the history of the nation. Ironically, by 1970s every stretch of Route 66 was bypassed by the Federal Highway System.
Fundamentally a preservation story, “Cars” exemplifies the efforts of local stakeholders to make a difference in their community. Undaunted by the change in traffic patterns and the decline of their town, the citizens of Radiator Springs hold fast to their ideals and work toward the revitalization of their community. Relying on their history and the importance of the historic road, Sally and Lighting McQueen and their friends revitalize their town. The Starkville Central Neighborhood Foundation (SCNF) is a membership-based organization that believes these goals are good ones for Starkville too. Members of the Screen Team for Movies on the Green include Mark Duncan, Bob Fuller, Michelle Jones, Stacey Parvin and Bethany Stich. This free community event is co-sponsored by Armstrong Middle School, Video Magic 1 and Metrocast. Those attending are encouraged to bring their own picnic meals, but there will be some refreshments available for sale, including popcorn, to benefit the Armstrong Middle School Council. The last film of the series will be “Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix” on June 26, in anticipation of the theater release of “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince”
