Van Montgomery Cagle
TUPELO â€” Van Montgomery Cagle, 55, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010 at his home in Tupelo. He was born June 1, 1955 in Tuscaloosa, Ala., to Marion and Betty Montgomery Cagle.
Van attended First United Methodist Church and was a 1973 graduate of Tupelo High School.
He received his undergraduate degree from Mississippi State University in 1977 and earned his masterâ€™s and doctoral degrees in oral and written communications from the University of Illinois in 1983.
Dr. Cagle was a professor of sociology and popular culture classes in the Communications Department of Tulane University located in New Orleans, La., for 6 years. He loved Champagne, Ill., and New York City, where he lived for 10 years working for the Center for Study of Media and Society.
Â Van was the published author of a book, â€śReconstructing Pop\Sub Culture; Art Rock and Andy Warholâ€ť. He wrote a chapter about Elvis fans in the book, â€śAfterlife as Afterimageâ€ť and was the author of numerous articles in various publications. He had a love for art and pop Culture.
A graveside funeral will be held at 10 a.m. at Tupelo Memorial Park on Joyner Street with the Rev. Andy Ray officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Holland Funeral Directors Tupelo chapel.
Survivors include his parents, Marion and Betty Cagle of Tupelo, a sister, Libby Cagle Pollard (Roy) of Starkville; a niece, Lindsay Pollard of Oxford; and a nephew, Kyle Pollard of Starkville.
