The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for western Oktibbeha County, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday.
A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was spotted near Ackerman, moving northeast at 45 mph. Radar showed the storm was rotating, indicating possible tornado formation, according to the weather service. Quarter-size hail is also possible.
"Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter," the weather service announcement said. "Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely."
The storm is expected at Sherwood around 2:25 p.m., Longview around 2:30 p.m., and Maben around 2:35 p.m. Weir and Sturgis may also be affected. Residents are urged to take shelter in basements or interior rooms on the lowest floor. Avoid windows; if in a mobile home or vehicle, move to the nearest substantial building.
