Before the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1984, Nintendo first introduced their mascot Mario on this day in 1981's "Donkey Kong."

In "Donkey Kong" Mario (known simply as Jumpman) worked his way through three different levels to save the love of his life (at the time), Pauline. The game was one of the first to use cut-scenes to build character development.

Nintendo was sued in 1982 by Universal Studios for copyright infringement of the film "King Kong." In the end, the judge ruled in Nintendo's favor.
