The suspected killer has been identified in a Saturday morning shooting that left a local optometrist dead at the Walmart Supercenter on Highway 12.

The Starkville Police Department says 41-year-old William Thomas “Tommy” Chisholm, of Kosciusko, is now facing a capital murder charge after he shot 42-year-old Dr. Shauna Witt inside of Walmart a little after 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.

SPD Public Information Officer Brandon Lovelady confirmed burglary to be the underlying charge that resulted in Chisholm being charged with capital murder.

Oktibbeha County Coroner Michael Hunt identified Witt as the victim and officials at OCH Regional Medical Center provided further details.

Hospital officials told the Starkville Daily News Witt was brought into the emergency room with two gunshot wounds at 9:58 a.m. and was pronounced dead at 10:05 a.m.

Witt worked as an optometrist at the eye clinic inside the store.

SPD said in a press release that Chisholm and Witt were in an “on-again-off-again” dating relationship.

Chisholm was currently out on a felony bond for a previous incident related to the victim.

SPD Chief Frank Nichols said in a Saturday morning press conference that officers responded to a shots fired call at Walmart around 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning. When they arrived on scene, they encountered an armed white male. After a brief struggle, he was detained and is in custody.

Nichols said in an afternoon press conference that Chisholm entered the store confronting the victim and fired several shots inside.

Witt was the only person injured at the time of the shooting.

Lovelady said it is unclear at this time if Chisholm will face any additional charges.

Chisholm is scheduled to appear in Starkville Municipal Court at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

SPD says it is still actively investigating the shooting, but said Walmart would reopen at 7 a.m. on Sunday morning.
