Sudduth book give away

October 29, 2010

Students at Sudduth Elementary received a wonderful treat this week during their library period.
First Book Clearing House awarded Sudduth Librarian Debbie Allen with this term’s book distribution prize.
First Book is a company who donated books to children to take home to add to their own personal libraries.
“They don’t want the books to go on the school book shelves; they want the children to take them home,” Allen explained. “They want to encourage reading for pleasure among young children.”
To be eligible for the distribution, Allen had to sign up with First Book, and in her six years at Sudduth, this is the first time she has been selected to receive the books. Allen helped bring 1,700 books to Sudduth so that each child could bring a brand new book home.
“If parents only knew how much reading to their children does for their academic life, they would be doing it every day,” Allen said. “Reading is just everything... It creates an unbelievable learning environment.”
The students had their pick of five books, and all the books were appropriate for kindergarten through second grade readers.
Allen is always so touched by the enthusiasm the children show when they learn the books are for them to keep.
