Streaky MRA looks for win over SA Vols

October 6, 2010

Madison-Ridgeland Academy looks to break past the .500 mark on Friday as it hosts Starkville Academy.
Head coach Mack Norwood's Patriots (3-3) enter the contest on the heels of a 21-10 loss to Pillow Academy last week.
The defeat was just the latest setback in what has, to this point, been a bit of an up-and-down campaign for MRA.
After crusing past Yazoo County 47-6 to open the 2010 season, the Patriots dropped two straight.
First, MRA narrowly lost 14-12 to Jackson Prep, the Associated Press' Mississippi Association of Independent Schools current top-ranked team, then followed that with a 38-14 loss to Jackson Academy, currently the AP's third-ranked team.
MRA rebounded from the back-to-back losses to Jackson-area powerhouses by winning two in a row, rolling past Heritage Academy and Magnolia Heights, 34-6 and 35-6 respectively.
Currently, the Patriots offense, led by quarterback Stewart Summers, is averaging just over 25 points per game.
Yet MRA relies heavily upon their defense, a unit that has given up the fewest total points (91) of any team in District 1 of Class AAA-I.
To this point in the season, as the Patriots' defense goes, so goes the team.
MRA's defensive unit has allowed exactly six points in all three of the team's 2010 wins.
In the club's three losses, the defense has surrendered an average of more than 24 points per game.
Friday's game will be just the third time this season MRA has played on its home field.
Attempts to reach Norwood for his perspective on the team were unsuccessful.
The Patriots currently stand at 1-1 on their own turf.
Friday's game kicks off at 7 p.m.
