The Mississippi Highway Patrol will start stepped-up patrols and enforcement for the New Year's holiday at 6 p.m. Thursday, and will continue until midnight Friday, according to Capt. Johnny Poulos, public affairs director for the highway patrol.
“Troopers will be conducting multiple safety checkpoints statewide in order to remove impaired drivers from the roadways in Mississippi,” he said in a news release.
The highway patrol dealt with 70 crashes, including two deaths, over New Year's 2014, Poulos said.
“”We are asking all motorists who are planning to participate in festivities concerning New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day to please have designated drivers in place if needed,” he said. “These responsible decisions ensure safe travel and joyous celebrations for all.”
