After getting off to another quick start in a game this season with four runs in the top of the first, the Lady Yellowjackets saw the advantage slip away in the same frame.
J.Z. George was able to take advantage of Starkville miscues in the field to tie the game 4-4 which prompted the timeout from Spencer.
"I think we got a case of the nerves there, but we shook it off and got our heads back in the game and did what we had to do," Spencer said.
The message was delivered by Spencer and the Lady Jackets were able to respond for their first win of the season in an 8-4 decision.
In the third inning, Starkville regained the lead with three runs on four hits. Verlyncia Leonard and Nicole Hatchett had back-to-back singles with one out and both ended up scoring. Iyuana Clark reached on a fielder's choice and scored to put the Lady Jackets up 7-4.
Starkville added another run in the fifth to provide the final tally.
The comeback character of the Lady Jackets showed up once again, only this time it resulted in a victory, and Spencer is proud that her team finds ways to keep fighting.
"There's still that effort to where if we get down, we don't get out and continue to give 100 percent," Spencer said. "They aren't quitters."
After the first inning, Starkville pitcher Ta'deshea Johnson settled down to work five scoreless innings.
Johnson had the base-loaded against her in the four inning, but got two strikeouts and a ground ball out to get out of danger.
"That was big and what we needed right on time," Spencer said. "She's been coming through for us and I was very pleased."
The Lady Jackets had 13 hits as a team with Reonee Clark leading the way with a triple and single. Leonard, Hatchett, Ta'deshea Johnson and Shanice Campbell had two singles each.
Starkville had two other games scheduled for the East Webster Tournament and will host Meridian on Tuesday.
