SHS volleyball wins two of five at tournament

RIDGELAND – The Starkville High School Lady Jacket volleyball team won two out of five matches and finished fourth in the Varsity Gold Division Tournament's platinum bracket at the Ridgeland Tourism Commission Set It Off Challenge Friday and Saturday.
The fifth annual event included 27 schools with 11 of those having a varsity and junior varsity team participate.  Starkville's varsity and junior varsity teams participated.
The field featured 14 of the 24 quarterfinalist from the 2009 MHSAA State Championships, as well as eight of 12 semifinalists, five of six finalists, and all three state champions (Tupelo, Lake Cormorant, and OLA).
The Lady Jackets opened the tournament by defeating Vancleave 25-14, 15-25 and 15-12 at St. Andrew's Episcopal School on Friday. Wheeler Richardson scored eight points, had 12 assists and six digs, while Khris Carr recorded a pair of aces, three kills, two blocks and two digs, Margaret Allison had one kill, one block and two digs, and Rebecca Myles did the double-nickel with five kills and five blocks.
In a 25-20, 30-28 loss to Lake Cormorant later that night, Wheeler Richardson scored eight points, served four aces, had seven assists and registered five digs for Starkville, while Elizabeth Scott had 10 digs, McKay Richardson chipped in two kills and seven digs, and Grace Drumheller contributed one ace, eight points and two digs.
The Lady Jackets bounced back Saturday morning to win their second match of the Challenge against Our Lady Academy 26-24, 25-23. Richardson scored 12 points with four digs, nine assists and five aces, while Scott had two aces, four points, four kills and eight digs, Myles chipped in three kills and one block, and Drumheller added eight digs.
In a 25-21, 25-17 loss to rival Tupelo, Starkville was led by Wheeler Richardson with four aces, seven points, five assists and four digs. Scott had one ace, three kills and five digs, McKay Richardson recorded one ace, three kills and four digs, Carr chipped in one ace and one block, Drumheller collected nine digs, and Myles and Tierra Tillman had two blocks each.
Hancock swept the Lady Jackets 25-12, 25-8 in their final match of the Challenge. Wheeler Richardson had three aces and five points, Drumheller collected nine digs, Scott added nine digs, Priyanka Parajuli chipped in two aces and three points, and Jondia Weatherspoon was credited with one attack.
Starkville (2-3) plays its home opener on Tuesday against Corinth. The action starts with junior varsity at 5:30 p.m.
