Sewage leak puts Josey Creek off limits

A sewer main break near Josey Creek in Starkville led the state Department of Environmental Quality to put out a water contact advisory Tuesday for that body of water.
The affected area runs north from where Highway 182 West crosses the creek to Josey Creek's confluence with Trim Cane Creek, according to a news release from Robbie Wilbur of the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.
The sewer main break has been repaired, but there was a discharge of untreated sewage into Josey Creek, Wilbur said. People are urged to avoid any contact with the water – such as wading or swimming – and avoid eating fish from the creek until further notice.
State inspectors will measure water quality and bacteria levels, and will revise the advisory accordingly.
