If the Starkville High School girl’s basketball team hadn’t already put the rest of Class 6A on notice, they did on Friday night.
In a matchup of two of the state’s top teams regardless of class, the Lady Yellowjackets emphatically made a statement that they were the team to beat moving forward.
Starkville used an early 19-0 run and blew passed Olive Branch 76-54 to punch its ticket to Jackson State next week.
Olive Branch handed the Lady Jackets their first loss of the season back on December 30. The possible rematch was a game that the entire team had circled since.
After falling to Columbus two games later, the team made a turn and reeled off 12-straight wins as it now heads to the biggest stage.
“No knock against Olive Branch that first time around, but I don’t think we gave our very best,” SHS head coach Kristie Williams said. “We were still trying to find our groove back in December. I think we finally found our pace.”
