The second suspect in an Aug. 15 incident in which shots were fired into a north Starkville apartment is now in custody.
Kenneth Lurshon Pittman, 33 — also known as Shawn Pittman — of 305 Everglade Ave., Apt. 21B, was arrested in an early morning raid at a home on Pheba Beasley Road this past Thursday.
The raid, which occurred about 6 a.m., was conducted by Starkville Police Department officers working in partnership with Clay County sheriff’s deputies.
Pittman, who was found hiding in a closet lying on the floor under a pile of dirty clothes, was taken into custody without incident and arrested on a charge of burglary of an occupied dwelling in the Aug. 15 at Brookville Gardens Building 23.
Pittman remains jailed on a $25,000 bond.
The other suspect in the case — Sam West Lee, 26, of 511 Whitfield St., Apt. 4 — was arrested Aug. 31 and is free on a $50,000 bond.
In the Aug. 15 incident, at least five shots from a 9-millimeter handgun were fired into the first floor apartment at Brookville Gardens Building 23, where four people were believed to have been in the apartment at the time.
Fired through the front door, the bullets struck multiple walls and furniture in the living room, and multiple bullets and shell casings were recovered from the apartment, Starkville Police Department detectives said at the time.
Lee and Pittman were identified as the suspects in the case based upon evidence recovered at the scene of the shooting and witness statements, said SPD detectives at the time of Lee’s arrest two weeks ago.
The two suspects are being charged with burglary because they kicked in the door of the apartment and entered with the intent of assaulting a young man inside, police said.
The young man’s name is not being released amid safety concerns, police said.
Charges of shooting into an occupied dwelling may be filed against the two pending results of Mississippi Crime Lab tests on evidence recovered in the investigation, and other charges are also possible, police detectives said recently.
