The benefit of three early goals for the Starkville Academy soccer team on Tuesday was an easy win and even more important, a good rest for some players who desperately needed a breather.
Bailey Clark scored two of the three first-half goals and Starkville Academy went on to a 5-0 victory against Magnolia Heights School at the Starkville Sportsplex.
"I thought we all played well together," Clark said. "We passed well to each other and we had a good day."
With Tiffany Huddleston sitting out with a quad injury and Sallie Kate Richardson limited with a sore hamstring, the Lady Vols got some unexpected contributions from other players during the match.
Along with the goals by Clark, SA got a first-half goal from sophomore Jessica Dennis, then one each from 8th-grader Anna McKell and sophomore Tiffany Evans in the second half.
"There's only one senior and I'm the only junior," Clark said. "All of the younger girls are great players so I think we'll have a good future."
Starkville Academy coach Robert Gardner was happy to use many players who don't normally get to play and move some players around.
"I got to see Anna (McKell) in a different position," Gardner said. "She's played really well for us in the center of defense, but I wanted to see her in a different role and she was able to get a goal out of it and I was happy about that."
The Lady Vols (5-6 overall) return to action Thursday at Washington School.
Gardner said Huddleston is day to day with her injury and will wait until Thursday to see if she's ready to go. He expects Richardson to be ready to play.
