Organizers of the 2011 Oktibbeha County Relay for Life benefitting the American Cancer Society have already started preparing for the event and will be hosting an informational meeting Monday to sign up returning teams and provide information for prospective teams interested in getting involved in the event.
The informational meeting will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Starkville Daily News offices at 304 E. Lampkin St.
Representatives from teams that participated in the 2010 Relay are encouraged to come by and register for the 2011 event, and information about the 2011 event will be distributed at the meeting.
A Cancer Society representative will be on hand to help with team registration at Monday’s meeting.
“Team representatives can drop in at any time during the meeting. It’s a come-and-go event just to distribute information and go ahead and get teams signed up that know they plan to participate in the 2011 Relay,” said Relay Committee chair Diane Holloway.
“We also want anyone who is interested in starting a team to come by and see what we’re about.”
Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate cancer survivorship and raise money to support American Cancer Society research, education, advocacy and patient assistance programs.
During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps around a track surrounded by booths and tents representing each team.
Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.
Games, food and live entertainment are big part of the local Relay for Life event. But a primary focus is honoring cancer survivors and paying tribute to those who lost their battles with the disease.
The 2010 Oktibbeha County Relay raised more than $89,000 for the Cancer Society, surpassing the event’s $75,000 fund-raising goal and setting a record for the local event. T
he fundraising goal for the 2011 Relay has been set at $100,000; the event is scheduled from 6 p.m. May 6 to 6 a.m. May 7, 2011, at the Starkville Sportsplex.
The theme for the 2011 Relay is “An Old-Fashioned County Fair: Remembering a Simpler Time Before Cancer.”
“We’ve got a great theme, and we’re already working toward making the 2011 Relay even bigger and better than this year’s event,” said Holloway, herself a breast cancer survivor. “We’ve already got some great things in the works and a lot of good ideas.”
