Giving back to the community has always been a priority for Travis Outlaw.
Each offseason, the former Starkville High School basketball player returns home to encourage and make a difference.
Outlaw, who just signed a contract to join the New Jersey Nets this summer, celebrated the move by helping a city youth all-star team be able to attend the Dizzy Dean World Series.
Each year, Starkville shows its appreciation back to Outlaw by holding "Travis Outlaw Day." This year's event is being held Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at McKee Park.
"This is very important from the basis that Travis is from Starkville and he gives back to the
community," said Derrick Outlaw, a first cousin of Travis and one of the organizers of Travis Outlaw Day. "He encourages youth to go to school, do what's right and shows where little opportunities can get you. During the season, it's tough for him to show that when he's away, but this is one day where we can give back."
Offering donations is nothing new for Travis and has shown his love and passion for children in other areas by hosting community events to support Boys and Girls Club and other local charities.
For all of the thoughtfulness Travis has shown over the years, the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of Starkville declared August 26 as "Travis Outlaw Day" in August of 2005. The Starkville School District retired Travis' high school jersey that same day.
There are events scheduled throughout the day and the public is encouraged to sign up to
participate at the Starkville Sportsplex.
