OSERVS fundraiser nets $2,000

October 20, 2010

An initial fundraiser for the Oktibbeha-Starkville Emergency Response Volunteer Services (OSERVS) was a success, organizers say.
Syrup and service were the highlights last Saturday at Applebees as local politicians served pancakes to support local disaster relief efforts coordinated by OSERVS.
Saturday’s fundraiser raised more than $2,000 to benefit OSERVS programs.
“We are very pleased to have the Oktibbeha Starkville Emergency Response Volunteer Services active in our community,” said Jim Britt, Oktibbeha County emergency management director. “And we appreciate everyone who came out and donated to help it get started,” he said at the fundraising breakfast at Applebee’s.
Starkville Mayor Parker Wiseman and Vice Mayor Sandra Sistrunk, along with Alderman Jeremiah Dumas, were on hand to act as waiters, as were Oktibbeha County supervisors Marvell Howard and Daniel Jackson.
“These are the same people who worked so hard for the victims of the Campus Trails, Crossgates, and Academy Crossing apartment fires,” said Becky Wilkes, director of the new OSERVS organization.
“Their hearts are with the community and they’ll do whatever they can to support it. That’s what makes this such a special organization.”
Wilkes said the fundraiser surpassed those held in previous years.
“We can’t say enough about the good people at Applebee’s who enabled us to do this,” said Carol Moss Read, chairperson of the organization. “They have been delightful to work with and we truly appreciate their support. It will definitely benefit the community.”
