The Oktibbeha County Humane Society is having a limited time sale for dogs, with adoption fees dropping to $50 for the sale.

At first, the sale was focused on dogs over a year old, but was extended on Wednesday to include puppies, as well.

OCHS Outreach Coordinator Sarah Buckleitner said the shelter is near full capacity, with 36 dogs of varying age and breed.

Though the younger dogs are now also included in the sale, Buckleitner said there are benefits to adopting older dogs. The first benefit is the animal's temperament has already been established and their personality has developed.

"You can meet animals that fit your temperament and you know will mesh well in your household," Buckleitner said. "With a puppy, you just don't know. There are a lot of variations from puppy to puppy."
Another benefit Buckleitner shared is when adopting an adult rescue dog, owners get to see the dog's first experiences in a home.

"They may have lived on the streets for two years and have never slept in a dog bed before, or have never had their own bowl or gone swimming," Buckleitner said. "With a puppy you get firsts, too, but there's a sense of gratitude when they know what life can be like."

The adoption fee includes all age-appropriate vaccinations, a microchip, the spay or neuter of the animal, and 30 days of pet insurance.
