The Starkville Yellowjackets were in a bind heading into the Class 6A State championship.
They had a bell cow in the form of senior Avery Brown, who had already rushed for over 1,500 yards and had 17 touchdowns, but a knee injury suffered against Madison Central the week before was keeping him from 100 percent.
SHS head coach Ricky Woods would have to turn to a young sophomore, who has had more than a few fumbles in practice and in the games. Andreus Swanigan was in a different zone against Petal, though. He carried the load and was the Jackets’ biggest weapon leading his team to a 27-7 victory and a trophy.
“(Avery) got hurt last week and my little sophomore came in and did a great job,” Woods said. “He’s a really good football player. He’s had ball control problems, but he didn’t have any (Friday).”
