MSU to drop ROTC flag ceremony before football games

The activities preceding Saturday's football matchup between Mississippi State University and Louisiana State University will lack one familiar ritual: presentation of the flag by the Air Force ROTC Detachment 425 color guard.
University officials have removed the ceremony from the event lineup as one part of an effort to cut down the pregame event list, according to Sid Salter, MSU public affairs director.
“This standardizes football with what we're doing and have been doing for years with other sports,” Salter said.
That doesn't mean all patriotic observances are being dispensed with, he said: the Famous Maroon Band will perform “It's a grand old flag” while spelling out “USA” on the field, as the Jumbotron displays Davis Wade Stadium's permanent American flag. The band will turn toward the flag, then perform the national anthem, Salter said.
