MaxxSouth Broadband is ready to go live with its 1 gbps fiber Internet service in two areas of Starkville, CEO Peter Kahelin said Wednesday.

MaxxSouth is the second company to launch fiber internet service in Starkville, with C Spire launching its fiber to the home internet service in 2014.

Customers can now receive MaxxSouth's fiber Internet service in the Cotton District and Hiwassee Drive areas in Starkville, Kahelin said. The service will become available in the Green Oaks, South Montgomery and Oktibbeha Gardens areas in the coming weeks. Kahelin said the company is ahead of schedule in building the infrastructure for the project and expects to have the fiber service available to all of Starkville by the end of 2015 or early 2016. The areas included in the initial launch have approximately 7,500 homes.

C Spire's fiber Internet service is available in three Starkville "fiberhoods." Those areas include South Montgomery, Hiwassee Road/Hospital Drive and Timbercove/College Station/The Polos. The central Starkville/downtown/Cotton District fiberhood is in the engineering phase, according to C Spire's website. Other areas of Starkville have not had enough residents pre-register for the service to begin installation of the necessary infrastructure.

MaxxSouth's fiber Internet service is slightly cheaper than C Spire's. Kahelin said his company will charge $77.95 per month for the service, while C Spire currently charges $80. MaxxSouth customers will receive a discount on the monthly price if they sign a one-year contract, but a contract is not required.

Starkville is one of few cities with competing fiber Internet providers. The service is widely considered to be among the best residential Internet options available.

"This is the infrastructure of thee future,” Starkville Mayor Parker Wiseman said when MaxxSouth announced its fiber Internet plans in April. “It is important today in terms of improving the experience our citizens receive through the Internet in our homes. It’s even more important for tomorrow as we seek opportunities to grow and prosper by being ahead of the technology curve.”

Residents can find out if fiber Internet is available at their location from MaxxSouth by calling the customer service center at 1-800-457-5351.
