The Starkville Public Library will present programs centered on Greg Mortensonâ€™s popular book â€śThree Cups of Teaâ€ť for teens, for youngsters in fourth through sixth grades and for preschool children from the end of August until the end of September.
The book, which is the 2010 MSU Maroon Edition and which is also one of the featured selections of Starkville Reads this fall, has three versions: One for adults and teens, one for young readers aged 9-11, and one for pre-schoolers entitled Listen to the Wind.
Numerous copies of all three versions were donated to the library by Starkville Reads.
Teen librarian Anna Ruhs said the young adult book club, which meets Wednesdays at 4 p.m., began reading the adult version at their Aug. 18 meeting and will discuss several chapters each week until Sept. 29.
To supplement the discussion, Ruhs says that the group members will consider many aspects of the book from the culture of Pakistan and Afghanistan, the two settings, to their history and geography.
They will take advantage of the clothing, dolls and other items from these countries which are currently on display at the library, Ruhs said.
Those who are interested may attend the program at MSUâ€™s Humphrey Coliseum on Sept. 23 which will feature the bookâ€™s author; free tickets are available at Barnes and Noble and are required for entry.
Laura Tramel, the childrenâ€™s librarian, is currently holding sessions on Tuesdays at 4 p.m. on the Young Readersâ€™ version of the book. The sessions began Aug. 17 and will continue until Sept. 28.
Fifteen youngsters attended the first session, and she anticipates that several other interested readers will join the group. Currently, all of the Young Readersâ€™ versions are checked out, attesting to the interest in the book.
On Sept. 22 at 11 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m., Tramel will feature â€śListen to the Wind,â€ť the young childrenâ€™s colorful version of the book, at the preschool story time. More information on this event will be announced at a later date.
