The funeral mass for Marion â€śMikeâ€ť Blass Couvillion will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church.Â
Visitation was held Thursday evening at Welch Funeral Home, which is handling the arrangements.
Mrs. Couvillion, 67, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010 at OCH Regional Medical Center. She was born Marion Lucille Blass on Oct. 14, 1942, in New Orleans, La., to William Joel and Marion Merritt Blass.Â
She spent her youth in Wiggins and, in 1960, she graduated from St. Maryâ€™s Dominican High School of New Orleans, La. She went on to receive her bachelorâ€™s and masterâ€™s degrees in speech pathology from Louisiana State University and a doctoral degree in sociology from Mississippi State University.
Marion and Warren Carl Couvillion Sr. were married on Feb. 8, 1964, in Wiggins.They moved to Knoxville, Tenn., where he earned his doctoral degree and she was employed at the University of Tennessee Speech Pathology Department.
In 1971, they made their home in Starkville, where they raised their two children, Billy and Courtney. They actively enjoyed everything the university and community offered.Â
Over the years, she received many awards from Mississippi State University including the MSU Faculty Achievement for Teaching, and was a John Grisham Master Teacher as well as president of the Robert Holland Faculty Senate.
She was active in the community and always willing to volunteer her time to many organizations including Master Gardeners, book clubs, the Board of Directors of the Starkville Country Club, House Board for Phi Mu sorority, Starkville Reads, Rose Society and many others.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she contributed many service hours cooking for the Catholic Students Association and working with St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.
She served as president of the Saint Joseph Catholic Parish Council and the Ladies Auxiliary.
She had a tremendous passion for life and enjoyed cooking, gardening and traveling.Â But her favorite pursuits were following her grandchildrenâ€™s activities throughout the state and spending time with family and friends.She never missed a good party and was often the reason for it.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Warren; her son, Billy and his children, Warren Felipe and Jose Benjamin, of San Antonio, Texas; her daughter, Courtney and husband Andy Watson, and their children Blass, Brittany and Brandt, all of McComb; her father, Joel Blass of Pass Christian; her sister, Pam, and her husband Bill Lawhead of Oxford; and her sister, Marie and her husband, Jim Faust, of Starkville.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Marion Merritt Blass, and her sister, Sandra Blass Fries.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Starkville, Church Endowment.
