INGOMAR — The funeral for Margaret Russell Gaines will be at 2 p.m. today in the United Funeral Service Chapel in New Albany with burial in Ingomar Cemetery. Brother Charles Smith will officiate. United Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Gaines, 90, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County. She was born Aug. 17, 1920, in Warren County to Lee V. Russell and Harriett Miller Russell. She was a retired clerk and bookkeeper for the Mississippi Highway Department. Mrs. Gaines was an avid reader, believing the opportunities of life could be unlocked by reading books. She was a member of the Union County Literacy Council and worked until her death teaching adults how to read. She took pride in the advancement of her students. She was also active with the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Eastern Star. She taught Sunday School class at Ingomar United Methodist Church. She loved her animals, especially her dogs.
Survivors include two sons, Russell (Lynn) Gaines of Starkville and David (Cathy) Gaines of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren, Chelsea and Austin Gaines of Houston, Texas; and a dear nephew, friend and driver, Ted Gaines of New Albany.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Lee Gaines; one sister and one brother.
Memorials may be made to the Union County Literacy Council.
