Lady Volunteers win one of three at invitational

August 7, 2010

The Starkville Lady Volunteers ran out of gas on Saturday.
After winning five of their first seven games of the season, the Lady Vols dropped three of their last four, including winning only one of three games during Saturday's Starkville Academy Invitational played at the Mississippi State Recreational Complex.
Lady Vol head coach Jessica Dickens said the fatigue showed during the tournament.
"It's been a long week," Dickens said. "We've played seven games in six days and I think they were (fatigued) but nevertheless they've got to forget it and play. Everybody is tired and everybody is playing a lot right now."
After defeating Central Academy 6-4 to open the tournament, Starkville Academy (6-5) lost to Leake Academy for the second time in as many days 2-1 and to Pillow Academy 6-3.
Bailey Wofford and Julianne Jackson each drove in a run with a single for SA against Pillow, while Megan Aucoin added two singles. Megan Picard also had a single.
Against Leake, Jackson drove in the only run with a double in the fourth inning. Aucoin, Mary Austin Barber and Shelby Marsh each had a single.
The day started well for the Lady Vols as they knocked off the Lady Vikings.
Wofford had three singles, while Marsh added a single and a double to lead the 12-hit attack. Picard and Jackson had two singles each.
Jackson was the winning pitcher and recorded seven strikeouts.
After having such a tough stretch of games to begin the season, Dickens plans to give the players off today and primarily hold a hitting practice on Monday.
"We want to give Julianne a little bit of rest," Dickens said. "I think it was good for them to go really hard at it starting off and I'm pretty pleased with what we've done. It was good for us to get a lot of games in early and learn to play when we're tired."
Starkville Academy opens conference play at home Tuesday against Washington School.
