Lady Vols rally in extras to beat Clarksdale-Lee

September 13, 2010

CLARKSDALE – Starkville Academy used a three-run rally in the eighth to edge Clarksdale-Lee 8-6 on the road in extra innings on Monday.
"It was very good, this late in the season, to have a game this close and be in this situation and come out on top," said SA head coach Jessica Dickens. "It was good experience for us."
Tied at five after seven, the Lady Volunteers (17-9, 4-2) put themselves in position to win immediately.
With Mary Austin Barber at second, Megan Picard was able to push Barber to third on a bunt. Picard herself also reached base on a Clarksdale-Lee error.
After Picard stole second, Bailey Wofford delivered a two-run double to give SA a 7-5 lead.
Wofford scored later in the inning to make it 8-5.
Clarksdale-Lee answered with a run in the bottom of the eighth, but behind the arm of winning pitcher Julianne Jackson, the Lady Vols held on for the win.
Wofford paced the SA offense in the game, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, a single, and four RBIs.
Megan Jones also added a pair of singles.
Barber finished with a single and an RBI, Emily Gregory had a triple, and Adrienne Futral came through with a single for SA.
The Lady Vols return to action today with a 4 p.m. non-district game at home against Oak Hill.
Prior to the game, SA will honor Wofford, the team's lone senior.
The Lady Vols conclude the regular season with a make-up game against conference foe Pillow Academy on Wednesday.
