The playground equipment at J.L. King Senior Memorial Park, located on Long Street, is getting a major upgrade.

The new equipment measures in at 37-feet long and 58-feet wide and is eight feet tall. It includes multiple slides, monkey bars, a climbing wall and other fun features with a capacity of 50 to 60 children.

Interim Parks and Recreation Director Gerry Logan said the Starkville Board of Aldermen approved the new equipment at the last board meeting.

Logan said the total cost of the equipment and installation is $42,850 dollars. The equipment was originally priced at $60,000 and was purchased at a discounted price.

"It was a really good chance for us to replace an aging playground," Logan said. "There are several parks in Starkville we want to upgrade, but J.L. King Park was at the top of our list."

Mayor Lynn Spruill said the new playground will be a major improvement from the old equipment.

"This is a brand new piece of playground equipment," Spruill said. "It's very large so it will accommodate a lot of children, and the one that is currently there has areas that we've had to rope off because it isn't safe. This will be an extraordinary opportunity for our kids to get out and play in large numbers."

Logan said the equipment was delivered within two days of ordering, and installation began on Thursday.

Crews will work through the weekend, and the installation should be complete at the beginning of next week, weather permitting.
