An early advantage on the road did wonders for Starkville High School competing against the defending Class 6A State champions.
Austin Campbell worked with that lead and held host DeSoto Central in check for a complete game as the Yellowjackets upset the Jaguars 4-1 in game three of the first round of the playoffs.
“This may be the first 6A playoff series we’ve ever won,” SHS head coach Travis Garner said. “I’m so proud of the kids. We’ve been on the doorstep a couple of times this year with Northwest Rankin and Madison Central but haven’t been able to pull it out. To go to DeSoto after the heartbreaker the other night and win the way we did is huge.”
