Public forums are set to begin across the state this week on an Initiative 42, the education initiative that will be on statewide ballots in November.
The forums will discuss the pros and cons of Initiative 42 and citizens will be allowed to make public comments. This first forum will be held Tuesday evening in Jackson. The closest to Oktibbeha County will be held in Tupelo on August 17 and in Meridian on August 20.
At the core of Initiative 42 is the Mississippi Adequate Education Program, a formula adopted by the legislature in 1997 that determines the amount a school district needs to provide an “adequate” education. Since its passage, MAEP has been fully funded twice.
