Gaining Ground conference set

July 26, 2010

For the Daily News

This weekend, the Gaining Ground Sustainability Institute of Mississippi will present a unique opportunity to learn and share more about sustainable living in Starkville at the first annual Mississippi Sustainability Conference, held July 30 - August 1 at the Bost Conference Center at Mississippi State University.
The goals for the conference include: showcasing current efforts in the state to cultivate “environmental conservation, innovation, and stewardship;” building a network to connect people and resources in the state; and advancing the development and growth of sustainable communities.
Friday’s lineup focuses on sustainable practices in architecture, landscape, and infrastructure. It includes sessions led by experts on the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program, greenways, community development, and waste and clean water initiatives.
On Saturday, the focus will shift to sustainable agriculture and food, including information on farmers markets, gardening, cheese making, edible landscapes, bee keeping, and more.
Sunday is field trip day. Participants may choose between three tracks: Mississippi State University sustainability efforts, community gardens and farmers markets, and sustainable architecture.
Registration is required for the conference, but funding from sponsors has allowed Gaining Ground to offer free registration for all participants.
Donations are encouraged, but not required. Sponsors include the Mississippi State University Department of Landscape Architecture, the Natural Resources Initiative of Northern Mississippi, and Mississippi Solar, LLC.
