A flash flood watch will be in effect from Wednesday afternoon until Thursday evening for 21 Mississippi counties, including Oktibbeha, Choctaw, Clay, Lowndes, Noxubee, Webster and Winston, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.
The area could get 3 to 5 inches of rain, or even more in spots, according to the announcement sent out Shank Phelps, Oktibbeha County EMA/E-911 director.
Some standing water remains from rain more than two weeks ago, so renewed downpours could cover roads, according to the National Weather Service in Jackson.
The flood watch will be in effect from 1 p.m. Wednesday until 7 p.m. Thursday. There is a chance of afternoon thunderstorms Wednesday, but heavy rain becomes more likely after 9 p.m.; and heavy storms may continue through the next day, only moving out of area around midnight Thursday, the NWS forecast says.
