ESPN visits MSU

November 2, 2010

Representatives from ESPN, the global sports and media juggernaut, will be on the campus of Mississippi State University today discussing internships and related opportunities with the company.
Dr. John Forde, head of MSU's Department of Communication, is hoping that all interested parties will attend some or all of the day's four sessions which begin at 10 a.m. in the Swalm building's room 001.
"I would just love for us to have a great showing of students and others interested," said Forde. "With ESPN being owned by Disney, one of the things I tell my students in class and everyone else is Disney owns all kinds of things including ABC. So for people interested in internships and other related opportunities, if you can get to meet some people, talk to somebody, and learn some things from them in person, that makes a big difference."
Visitors from the Bristol, Conn. based network will include Manager of College Relations Joe Franco, Associate Director of Production Management and Ad Sales Integration Ericka Hascall, and Supervisor of Production Operations Marybeth Westlund.
Following the day's first session, others will be held beginning at 1 p.m. in McCool Hall room 126 and at 2 p.m. in McComas Hall room 214, before the day's events are wrapped up in an information session at 6 p.m. in McCool Hall room 100.
According to Forde, ESPN currently has at least one intern from each school in the Southeastern Conference.
MSU student Blake Walters interned with them over the summer and will highlight his experiences at various times during the day's sessions.
Forde hopes the event will attract individuals seeking career opportunities in all areas of media and communication, not just the sports industry.
"Broadcasting, journalism, public relations-wise, there are just many, many opportunities with ESPN," said Forde.
