Clarksdale-Lee has six-game losing skid

October 13, 2010

With the pains of the last two seasons, Starkville Academy knows all about struggle.
So too does Lee Academy, the Vols' Friday night opponent.
When the Colts welcome SA to Clarksdale for a 7 p.m. contest, they'll do so on the heels of a six-game losing streak.
It's a skid that has given Lee and SA identical 1-7 records, a mark that ties for the bottom spot in all of Class AAA of the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools.
For the Colts to break out of their doldrums, they'll need to put forth a better performance than they exhibited a week ago against Magnolia Heights.
In that game, Lee lost three fumbles and fell victim to the Chiefs 31-14.
Multiple phone calls from the Starkville Daily News seeking comment from Lee head coach Robert Daniels or his coaching staff on Friday's game were unreturned, but he said earlier in the year that committing turnovers can often become mental for a squad.
"Fumbling gets in your head over a period of time," Daniels told the Clarksdale Press Register after the game. "After that, it becomes a mental thing. It's hard to overcome."
While even the best of teams can fall victim to mistakes, Lee's miscues might be more magnified than those of other squads simply due to inexperience.
The Colts have just four seniors on their roster, most notably quarterback Blayke Hester and running back Tyler Tackett.
"We've got to find some leadership," Daniels told the Press Register prior to the start of the season.
Last week against Magnolia Heights, Daniels may have begun to find what he's been seeking.
After falling behind 31-0, both teams began inserting subs. Daniels' bunch was able to rip off 14 unanswered points from that point forward, providing promise for the future if nothing else.
Still, an inexperienced defensive unit will have to exhibit composure and patience to have a chance at halting SA's option attack and give Lee a chance to climb back into the win column on Friday.
