Café Scientifique to meet

The CafĂ© Scientifique will meet Tuesday, September 28, at 6 p.m. at Zorba’s Greek Tavern in downtown Starkville. Shalyn Claggett will present “Victorian Pros and Poetry: Science as Literature in William Acton’s ‘Prostitution’.”
Dr. Claggett will discuss English physician William Acton’s research on venereal disease and how he used literary references and techniques to justify claims that his medical expertise and social observations could not.
Dr. Claggett is an Assistant Professor of English at Mississippi State University. Her current book project, The Science of Character in Victorian Literature and Culture, explores the relationship between phrenology and English literature in the nineteenth century.
