Mississippi State head coach Rick Stansbury was concerned.
He was worried about how his team would react to an 88-74 upset loss to Rider in the home opener one week ago.
He wasn’t sure how much time he could get out of injured players Dee Bost (ankle, groin), Riley Benock (foot) and Elgin Bailey (ankle).
Maybe he should be scared before every game.
Bost made the Bulldogs’ first shot, a 3-pointer from the top of the key, giving the Bulldogs (1-1) a lead they would never relinquish.
Benock checked in after the first media timeout and Bailey subbed into the game to a standing ovation with a little over three minutes in the first half.
Most importantly Mississippi State won its first game of the 2009-10 season by beating Southeastern Louisiana 82-67.
“Good to get one in the right side of the win column, that’s number one,” Mississippi State head coach Rick Stansbury said.
The Bulldogs avoided losing their first two games of the season since the 1967-68 campaign in front of a sparse Humphrey Coliseum crowd of 4,544.
Bost finished with 10 points in 32 minutes, Benock got two points in 15 minutes and the final three minutes of the first half was the only time MSU saw Bailey on the floor.
“We knew Dee would be able to go but for how long, we didn’t know. When you get in the game and the emotion gets going, it doesn’t take but one quick move that can hurt something,” Stansbury said. “I thought Riley’s minutes helped Stew (Barry Stewart) and Dee tremendously.”

The NCAA officially changed the amateur status of Mississippi State freshman forward Renardo Sidney to “under review” Thursday morning.
What would seem like developments toward a future resolution of the ongoing situation, the change is not how the news was interpreted by Sidney’s attorney Don Jackson.
In a statement released shortly after the NCAA’s update, Jackson called the change “insignificant” while he has received “no firm timetable” for a decision by the NCAA Eligibility Center.
“It is my belief, given the history of this case, that there will be further efforts to prolong a certification decision,” Jackson said.
Until Thursday, Sidney had been listed officially as “Not Certified due to Non-Response.” The NCAA stated the new status change “allows the Eligibility Center staff to restart the process of determining whether Sidney meets NCAA requirements for initial eligibility.”

CUMBERLAND – It’s not a normal occurrence for two head coaches to have a recent game tape to review with both teams on the field.
However, this is exactly the case as undefeated Ackerman plays East Webster in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A playoffs in a Region 2 rematch. The rivalry game ended in a 31-0 blowout win for the Indians (13-0) on Oct. 9.
Both teams have studied every angle of the tape with contrasting interpretations.
Ackerman’s coaching staff doesn’t put much weight in the game 42 days ago.
“That game was six to seven weeks ago,” Ackerman head coach Adam Dillinger said. “They are a much better team than when we saw them in the beginning of October. Sure we studied that tape but we don’t gain much from it.”
East Webster head coach Jimmy Carden said he may not want to see the film of the previous loss anymore in order to stay in a good mood.

SA basketball teams drop matches at JA
Friday, 20 November 2009
From Staff Reports

JACKSON — The Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers witnessed a team that was ready for payback Thursday, as Jackson Academy atoned for a pair of losses to Glenn Schmidt’s team last season with a 51-32 win.
JA raced out to a 21-0 lead to start the match before cruising to the win.
The rebound margin told the story, Schmidt said, as JA posted 32 boards to Starkville Academy’s 13.
“I can always, in my mind, tell how a team is playing by the way they rebound,” she said. “[JA] looked pretty good. That’s the best basketball team we’ve played this year.”

Holloway powers Ole Miss past Hoosiers in Puerto Rico Tip-off
Friday, 20 November 2009
For the Daily News

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Murphy Holloway scored a career-high 26 points and Ole Miss (3-0) gritted out an 89-71 win over the Indiana Hoosiers (2-1) in the first round of the O’Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-Off Thursday.
The Rebels had 12 blocks and eight steals in the first-round win and advance to play the winner of tonight’s Kansas State-Boston University matchup.
Holloway had seven rebounds to go with his career high in points, which surpassed his previous high of 18 set last year against Tennessee. Chris Warren helped with 16 points, while Eniel Polynice and Zach Graham chipped in 10 points apiece. Polynice dished out seven assists, and Reginald Buckner grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds.
The Rebels’ 12 blocked shots were one shy of a school record.
Indiana led 20-11 after the first six minutes of play before Ole Miss reeled off a 22-3 run that put the Rebels ahead 33-23 entering the final six minutes of the first half.
